Fans of 80’s comedies will remember Rick Moranis as the Darth Vader-spoof villain of Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs. Since the late 90’s, the actor has been effectively retired from the Hollywood scene, and sorely missed at that. But it seems like Moranis is slowly leaving retirement, Dark Helmet style!
Last week, Moranis returned to the screen after 11 years, reprising his role of Dark Helmet in ABC’s The Goldbergs. In his sole scene, he appears to Sean Giambrone in a dream, battling the Schwartz. Moranis was only credited as having done a voice role, so he was seemingly not under the Dark Helmet costume.
Show creator Adam Goldberg told ScreenCrush that he “courted Moranis for several weeks to get him to say ‘yes.’” It seems it’s also part of a master plan to get the conversation started about a Spaceballs sequel. If Mr. Brooks is reading this, we want to let him know that we’re all up for it! Also, we wouldn’t hate it if we got History of the World, Part II. Please, we’re begging.
In any case, it seems Moranis is slowly returning to mainstream Hollywood, or at least we hope he is. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor will appear on the Martin Scorsese-directed SCTV reunion, An Afternoon with SCTV. He was an integral part of the original show, even winning a writing Emmy for it in 1982.
For Moranis, SCTV was the beginning of a relatively short yet brilliant career in comedy. He went on to star in some amazing films, like Little Shop of Horrors and Ghostbusters. Of course, he was also Barney Rubble in the 1994 live-action adaptation of The Flintstones, opposite John Goodman’s Fred Flintstone.
After over a decade starring in films that are now considered comedy classics, he famously stepped out from Hollywood. Following the passing of his wife, it had become too difficult to be a single dad and a Hollywood star. Moranis has scarcely taken any roles ever since, picking his projects carefully. He was famously the only original Ghostbusters cast member who refused to do a cameo in the reboot.
Let’s hope this is a grand return to Hollywood for the Parenthood star!
