So far, we know very little about the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming two-part Infinity War event. Weeks away from Avengers 3, we know everyone will be facing Thanos to protect the Infinity Stones. However, things are bound to change story-wise after such a massive, universal event. One thing that seems likely: Chris Evans’ Captain America might die.

In a profile on The New York Times, Evans confirmed our fears: Avengers 4 will be his final Marvel movie. His stint with Marvel contractually ends after that movie, and he has no plans to renew. Seeing as he is the first Avenger, it’d make sense that Evans’ leaving would equal death.

Steve Roger’s death has been a growing theory for a while. In fact, many thought it’d happen during Captain America: Civil War. Why? Because he gets killed during the comic books Civil War event. CinemaBlend has a full list of hints of his death in the MCU.

As the movie franchise was leading up to Thanos, it seemed unlikely anyone died before that. Some fans have complained that the stakes in the MCU are too low: nobody seems to ever be in danger. The only major deaths so far have been Phil Coulson (relatively) and Quiksilver. Avengers 4, when contracts of major players are up, seems like a chance to shake things up.

The face of the MCU has changed quite a bit since the first Avengers movie came out in 2012. Back then, only Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk and Hawkeye were on the team. The roster has grown to include Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Vision, Spider-Man, Wanda Maximoff… and a few more. It seems more than likely that the newer heroes will be taking the mantle in Phase 4.

It’s even possible that we’ll see other characters play iconic names. Maybe James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) will be Iron Man once Robert Downey Jr. steps down. The recently reformed Bucky (Sebastian Stan) could be the new Captain America. Natalie Portman’s Jane could be Thor in Phase 4; it’s already happened in the comics.

Who knows? Maybe we’ll get a totally new universe with alternative Avengers and other Marvel characters. An X-Men mashup seems possible now that Disney’s buying Fox. How does a Deadpool-led Avengers movie sound?
