Famously, Zack Snyder had to step down from reshoots of Justice League after a family tragedy. A little over a year later, the filmmaker is now ready to get back to work, steering away from superheroes. His next project? An adaptation of Ayn Rand’s controversial novel, The Fountainhead.

A few days back, Snyder took to Vero to answer fan questions, as he sometimes does. User Supersonic34 asked the filmmaker about his next project, to which he simply replied “Fountainhead.”

We don’t know any details yet, but it isn’t the first time he’s expressed admiration for the book. It’s been a passion project for at least a couple of years, only it wasn’t a priority before. Back in 2016, Snyder had this to say about Rand’s novel:

“I’ve always felt like The Fountainhead was such a thesis on the creative process and what it is to create something.” Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter. “Warner Bros. owns [Ayn Rand’s] script and I’ve just been working on that a little bit.”

Of course, Snyder’s wouldn’t be the first Fountainhead adaptation. Back in 1949, King Vidor directed a film version, starring Gary Cooper and with a script by Rand herself. The film was panned by critics at the time, though now it’s seen with kinder eyes. Oliver Stone also attempted to adapt it in the early 2000’s, considering Brad Pitt as the lead.

Fountainhead isn’t the only project Snyder is currently involved in. He’s credited as a producer to basically every announced DC Extended Universe movie in the near future. That includes this year’s Aquaman and 2019 sequels Wonder Woman 2 and Suicide Squad 2. He’s also developing The Last Photograph, a film about a war photographer in Afghanistan. According to IMDb, it’s currently in pre-production, though there’s no official cast yet.

Snyder is best known for his comic book adaptations, which is what makes some of his planned projects so peculiar. His most recent films have made a lot of money but received mixed-to-bad reviews. It’s an odd combination in this age of superhero movie love, though particularly to all things Marvel.
