It’s been six years since the first Avengers movie came out, changing forever the world of cinematic comic book adaptations. While this year’s Infinity War had about 70 characters, the first movie featured just 6. And as the actors’ contracts are about to reach an end, 5 of them marked the occasion with matching tattoos!
It turns out the Avengers really are as close as we wish, or at least enough to get inked together. Last Monday, Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., took to Instagram to share a series of videos of the process. He was accompanied by three of his Marvel co-stars: Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner. It was revealed that all four had gotten the same design, by tattoo artist Joshua Lord. Although he wasn’t present for Downey’s inking process, Chris Evans also got the same design.
The only original Avengers actor who opted out of the tattoo was Mark Ruffalo, who plays Bruce Banner/Hulk.
Downey talked to Entertainment Weekly about the tattoo commemorating his decade-long stint with Marvel Studios.
“It was [Scarlett] Johansson’s idea, and she and [Chris] Evans did it in New York,” Downey explained. “Then, their New York guy, Josh Lord, who is amazing, flew out to LA, he did me, did [Jeremy] Renner, and then we just bullied [Chris] Hemsworth into doing it, and he got it.”
Although Ruffalo didn’t get his own tattoo, there was a sixth person who got that design: the tattoo artist. Each of the Avengers actors contributed by adding a line with the tattoo gun. In other words, there’s a guy out there who was tattooed by five Avengers, how cool is that?
While Marvel has been on the forefront of biggest superhero movies lately, tattoos are one thing DC did first. Back when Suicide Squad was filming, the cast got to tattoo each other. Margot Robbie, in character as Harley Quinn, gave several of her co-stars “SKWAD” tattoos.
Squad goals, squad goals all around!
