The job market today is entirely different from the one our parents lived. In this highly competitive world, you should have a diploma and a couple of languages under your belt. Duolingo has become popular due to its easy method of teaching many useful languages – and now, also Klingon.
Last week, the popular app announced they had added the Star Trek language to their roster. According to Cnet, this project has been in development since 2015, with five loving volunteers developing the course.
Finally, a way to start those peace talks with this war-inclined alien race!
In all seriousness, learning Klingon can help you exercise language-learning skills and also really imbue yourself in pop culture. Star Trek linguists created this language to sound really alien, and it has a very simple grammar. You can actually use this as a gateway language to more complex, human ones!
As with other languages on the Duolingo site and app, the actual learning is free, with a paid ad-free version.
Whether you’re lucky enough to come from a bilingual home or learned a second language in school, it’s a very valued skill. And, of course, nerd culture has also been on the rise for the past 15 years or so. All things considered, is it really that surprising that Klingon has finally made it to a popular language-learning app?
This isn’t the first constructed language on Duolingo. Esperanto, created by L. L. Zamenhof in the 19th century, can also be learned through the app. One interesting detail is that it is the first available language created for a piece of fiction. Could this addition mean we’ll see The Lord of the Rings’ many languages or even Game of Thrones’ Dothraki? There are many other sectors of geekdom dying to add a fictional language to their CV.
